50 Years in the Making
Five decades after the original Volkswagen Golf GTI, this new model builds on its heritage while continuing to push limits.
Since the first Golf rolled off the production line in 1974, with the GTI following in 1976, the Golf has become the best-selling European car of all time and Volkswagen’s most successful model.
Over the years, it has set the benchmark for what a compact sports car should be. It captured the essence of the times, gave its name to its own vehicle class, and has accompanied generations of drivers around the world.
The Most Powerful GTI Yet
Marking another milestone in the Volkswagen Golf’s remarkable history, the GTI Edition 50 carries the iconic Golf spirit forward – honouring the model’s legacy while raising the bar for performance and style. It’s made for those who appreciate the original and are ready for something truly extraordinary.
Powered by a turbocharged engine producing 239 kW of power and 420 Nm of torque, this exclusive model accelerates from 0–100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 270 km/h. The Golf GTI Edition 50 stands as the most powerful production GTI, delivering performance that lives up to its legendary name.
Distinctive design details ensure it looks just as impressive as it performs. With a GTI Edition 50 body kit, striking 19-inch Queenstown Red alloy wheels, and bold black exterior styling, this anniversary model is built to turn heads.
Inside, the cabin blends premium comfort with signature GTI character. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel provide everyday comfort, while details such as red seatbelts, red pedal caps, and the iconic ‘Clark’ fabric sports seats celebrate the GTI’s heritage. The result is a cockpit that feels both unmistakably GTI and perfectly suited for modern driving.

The Original Golf
Before the Golf arrived in 1974, the Volkswagen Beetle had defined the brand for decades with its rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel-drive layout. The launch of the Golf marked a major turning point, introducing a front-engine, front-wheel-drive design.
Although this technology had already appeared in 1973 with models such as the Volkswagen Scirocco and Volkswagen Passat, the Golf represented a major milestone. It brought the new layout to Volkswagen’s highest-volume vehicle segment and quickly demonstrated its appeal.
The original Golf’s modern and safe driving concept, combined with its practical tailgate and foldable rear seat backrest, was so convincing that by October 1976, Volkswagen celebrated production of the one-millionth Golf.
Launching the First Golf GTI
The first GTI hit the road in 1976, immediately becoming the icon of sporty compact cars. With its top speed of 182 km/hr, black exterior detailing, a red edge around the radiator grille, tartan sports seats, a golf ball gear knob, and a sports steering wheel, demand for the model far exceeded expectations.
What began as a planned run of 5,000 units grew to 461,690, marking the first chapter in what remains the world’s most successful compact sports car.
Five decades later, that original spark still burns. The GTI Edition 50 is proof of it.
Next Steps
50 years of driving excitement deserves a proper celebration, and the Golf GTI Edition 50 delivers. Blending heritage with modern performance, this landmark anniversary model is one worth getting excited about.
