The Pollination Tour: ID. Buzz x Hidden Honey
ID. Buzz x Hidden Honey
Flower Power Reimagined
New Zealand’s first mobile hive is hitting the road! An electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo has been transformed into a fully-functioning “beehive”, carrying 120,000 bees and the spirit of the original Kombi.
Led by Kiwi beekeeper James Green from Hidden Honey, the Volkswagen Pollination Tour is embarking on a road trip this month across the North Island to raise awareness about pollination and showcase the importance of bees to our ecosystem.
Combining education, engagement, and sustainability, this first-of-its-kind initiative will visit communities as it travels, sharing why pollinators matter and how we can all make a difference.
Polly the Pollinator
Polly is no ordinary Volkswagen ID. Buzz – she’s home to two thriving bee colonies. Journeying across the North Island, Polly is carrying her buzzing passengers from north to south, playing a vital role in the annual pollination that underpins our ecosystems.
From sustainable dairy and fruit to restored native bush and forestry, the welfare of these tiny workers is at the heart of this initiative. After all, bees are essential to life as we know it – and now, they’re finally getting the ride they deserve.
Carrying the Kombi’s Spirit
The original Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi symbolised a cultural revolution in the 60s that came to be known as Flower Power. New ways of thinking elevated ideas of natural harmony, self-expression, and freedom. Today, Polly carries that spirit forward – fully electric and buzzing with life, and home to two colonies of bees who come and go as they please.
A Van Full of Possibilities
How is this all possible? Meet the ID. Buzz Cargo – Volkswagen’s fully electric van that has been transformed into New Zealand’s first mobile hive. Starting with 3.9 m³ of cargo space, beekeepers and fabricators created a fully climate-controlled home for two thriving bee colonies.
Custom flower latches open as this hive on wheels arrives at new locations, allowing bees to come and go via entry and exit tubes. Inside, conditions are monitored through the standard Ready 2 Discover Infotainment System and a custom ‘Hive Mind’ that measures temperature, light, and air quality.
Pollination in Motion
Bees forage for nectar during the day before returning to their hive at night, at which point the van travels quietly and emission-free, covering up to 382 km on a single charge. Each morning, the bees then explore their new environment, pollinating fresh areas and creating a uniquely blended honey that’s never been tasted before.
The Honey Flow
Polly, James, and their team of bees move with the rhythm of Aotearoa’s “honey flow,” in arguably one of the country’s most remarkable natural collaborations.
Starting in the warmer north, the honey flow sweeps south as flowers bloom. Bees transfer pollen between blossoms, supporting clover, crops, native forests – and the foods we rely on, from kiwifruit to chillies and plums.
And of course, it produces one of New Zealand’s most treasured gifts: honey unlike any other in the world.
Endless Possibilities
More than just a white van, this partnership with Hidden Honey and putting 120,000 passengers in the back, this one-of-a-kind collaboration shows that caring for nature begins right at home.
Imagine what your business could do with its very own ID. Buzz Cargo.
